Pig Race Series

The Pig Races is a loose narrative built around a fictitious game/sporting event. The paintings deal with the relationship between spirit and body, depicted by man and animal. The racers run through gates and soar over jumps that derive from croquet and equestrian courses. As in real life, the action of the pigs is driven by the pursuit of the apple, the promised reward. The various allegorical hurdles represent the challenges we all face in life.Sometimes there is a play between the concept of mathematical perfection and the vagaries of everyday life. Sometimes the compositions incorporate the golden section. Sometimes there is a diagram imposed over the image. These measured hi-jinks express the way things can be perfectly planned in the abstract, but are subject to change as they materialize, as unpredictable in their outcome as the results of a race.
