I am fortunate to always spend part of the summer at our family
home on a lake in New York State. The idea for these paintings
came late one night when I was sitting on the dock, looking
across the water at the distant shoreline. It was a beautiful
night, dark and calm, serene. I was transfixed. I loved the
way the image in the night gave itself up so slowly. The basic
elements of sky, land, water, and reflection came together as
a perfect contemplative subject. These paintings are not so
much about specificity of place, but are evocations --- they're
tonal meditations on a landscape I have known all my life.
